About This Instrument
The kalimba descends from the African mbira — an instrument of ceremony, divination, and daily music-making across the continent for millennia. This seventeen-key version spans a full two-octave range, its steel tines mounted on a hollow wooden body that amplifies and warms each note. The instrument requires no tuning knowledge to begin playing; its scale is pre-set to sound harmonious in nearly any combination, making it as welcoming to a first-time player as to an experienced musician.
Harmonic Philosophy
The mbira — ancestor of the modern kalimba — is one of Africa's oldest melodic instruments, with versions documented over 3,000 years ago. Its 17 tines span more than two octaves of the natural overtone series, encoding ancient harmonic wisdom in metal.
